The Evergreen Conference and Greater St. Helen’s League champs squared off on Friday night in the Class 2A Round of 16 and it was a one-sided affair.
Eight sacks, 11 tackles for loss and another 300-plus yard team effort on the ground spurred the No. 2 seeded Tumwater past No. 15 Washougal 47-6 at Tumwater District Stadium. It puts the T-Birds back in the quarterfinals, where a date with No. 7 Franklin Pierce awaits.
“Our kids played well tonight in all three phases. It wasn't perfect, but they really did a nice job executing the gameplan,” Tumwater head coach William Garrow said. “We are going to have to really have a disciplined week of practice to prepare for what (Franklin Pierce) do offensively.“
Up just 7-6 after the opening 12 minutes, the Thunderbirds scored two touchdowns in the final three frames. Gavin Kaikkonen had three rushing scores while Jaxon Budd connected with tight end Evan Baxter for two touchdowns. Peyton Davis bulldozed his way to 142 yards on 14 carries.
Defensively, the trio of Landon Anchors, Nathan Salas and Mason Housekeeper each had multiple sacks and tackles for loss while Wyatt Chase nabbed an interception.
