With 10 minutes until kickoff, I took the field to gather notes, energy, and atmosphere ahead of one of the biggest games in Division III college football North Central College vs. University of Wisconsin-River Falls in the 2026 Stagg Bowl National Championship.

For North Central, this isn’t just another game it’s their sixth consecutive trip to the national title matchup, a testament to consistency and championship pedigree. The Cardinals are the defending Division III national champions, and they’ve built a culture of success with national titles in 2019, 2022, and 2024, and runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2023. They come into this contest undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation. The pressure is on them to bring home a title for the second year in a row and cement their growing dynasty but they’ve been here before, and they know what it takes.

On the opposite sideline, UW-River Falls is writing the most remarkable chapter in program history. The Falcons are playing in a national championship game for the first time ever. After winning their first outright WIAC conference title since 1998, River Falls has surged through the playoffs with confidence and momentum, including dominating performances and thrilling postseason victories.

At the heart of the Falcon attack is quarterback Kaleb Blaha a senior having a historic season. Blaha shattered school records in the semifinals with 520 passing yards and five touchdowns, leading UWRF to a stunning 48-41 victory over Johns Hopkins with a last-minute 79-yard touchdown connection to Blake Rohrer that will live forever in program lore.

Blaha’s play has been more than production it’s been inspiration: a player carrying a community’s hopes, aiming to bring the first championship in UW-River Falls football history to River Falls, Wisconsin.

The narratives couldn’t be more compelling:

  • Dynasty vs. Dream — a seasoned champion versus a rising underdog.
  • Experience vs. First-Time Pressure — North Central’s repeat aspirations against River Falls’ historic opportunity.
  • Legacy vs. Breakthrough — the Cardinals seeking back-to-back titles while the Falcons chase their first.

Tonight’s Stage Bowl (Stagg Bowl) at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio kickoff set for 8 p.m. ET and broadcast on ESPN promises far more than a game. It’s the collision of football tradition and historias being written in real time.

Who will rise?

Will North Central prove once again that they are the standard in Division III football? Or will UW-River Falls shock the nation and bring history home to Wisconsin?

Stay tuned this one has championship stakes written all over it.
